Break even + $250 31 items Targets $250 beyond break-even
Break even + $500 47 items Targets $500 beyond break-even

What this means

Once you reach your break-even sales target, each additional sale contributes toward profit before any costs you did not include here.

HOW BREAK-EVEN WORKS

The math behind the target

1. Add fixed event costs

Add the booth fee, travel, parking, food, and other expenses you take on because of the event.

2. Find contribution per item

Selling price minus product cost is the amount each item contributes toward covering your event expenses.

3. Divide costs by contribution

Fixed event costs divided by contribution per item gives the approximate number of item sales needed to break even.

CRAFT FAIR BREAK-EVEN FAQ

Common break-even questions from vendors

How do I calculate break-even sales for a craft fair?

Add your fixed event costs, then divide by the amount each item contributes after product cost. BoothMinty calculates the estimated number of item sales and revenue needed to cover those costs.

What costs should I include?

Include costs that happen because you attend the event, such as booth fees, travel, parking, food, lodging when relevant, and other event expenses. Product cost is handled separately because it changes with the number of items sold.

What if my selling price is lower than my product cost?

If your selling price does not exceed your average product cost, each sale does not contribute toward covering event expenses. In that situation, a normal break-even point cannot be reached without changing price, product cost, or both.

Does break-even include my labor time?

Only if you include labor in your product cost or other expenses. If your time is an important part of your decision, include a reasonable labor amount when comparing whether an event is worthwhile.

Should I book an event just because I can break even?

Break-even only tells you when listed costs are covered. You may also want to consider preparation time, selling time, opportunity cost, unsold inventory, and the profit you want the event to generate.
